About this title:
By George Gershwin. Edited by George Megaw. Arranged by Donald Grantham. Concert band. 68 pages. Published by Warner Brothers. (DH9902C)

Gershwin's PRELUDE II for PIANO is the second prelude in a set of threecomposed in 1936. In Donald Grantham's FANTASY VARIATIONS, both of the"big" tunes in the piece are fully exploited, but they do not appear inrecognizable form until near the end. The work begins with much moreobscure fragments drawn from the introduction, accompanimental figures, transitions, cadences and so forth. These eventually give way to morefamiliar motives derived from the themes themselves. All of theseelements are gradually assembled over the last half of the piece until thethemes finally appear in more or less their original form.
